Faggionato Fine Art is proud to announce Elisabeth Scherffig’s first exhibition in America. Elisabeth Scherffig’s large drawings are a result of an elaboration and transfiguration of the urban landscape in which the analysis of the materials, the structures and the forms are, through her unique technique of drawing, transformed into a very personal imagery. At first glance often mistaken for computer generated images or etchings, these works parallel the skill and intensity of many Old Master drawings whilst simultaneously bringing the viewer into the present with a very contemporary landscape. In this exhibition Scherffig presents five large (120 x 80 cm) vertical drawings, each depicting deconstructed urban environments. With small, repeated marks, Scherffig obsessively describes her imaginary landscape inch by inch. Large structures emerge from the rubble, a mass of twisted cables, teetering at the point of collapse. The vertical format of these works (a departure from the usual horizontal arrangement) accentuates the instability of these sculptural piles, leaving the audience uneasy about the future of the complex towers. Struggling to resolve the juxtaposition of extreme delicacy with extreme tension, the viewer is often left focusing on the sensitivity of her technique. Scherffig also presents a recent work composed of 15 smaller (80 x 60 cm) drawings. Whilst she continues to explore organic piles of scrap iron and tangles of different materials, the reduced scale of each element results in a change of focus. In this dense wall of drawings Scherffig brings to the centre of our vision what was at the margins of earlier work, in an attempt to restore dignity to what seemed unimportant. Born in 1949 in Dusseldorf (Germany) Elisabeth Scherffig has lived and worked in Milan (Italy) since 1970.
